Bottecchia Bikes

Bottecchia Origin

Bottecchia, one of the best known bike manufacturers in the world, started with a famed legend. This legend’s name was Ottavio Bottecchia. He was born on the 1st of August, 1894 in Borgo San Martino di Colle Umberto, Treviso, Italy. Ottavio competed in prize competitions ever since he was a young boy. In one of these competitions, he won a golden watch for winning first place.

Ottavio Bottecchia joined the Bersaglieri corps of the Italian army for World War I. He was part of a special regiment called “esploratori d’assalto”. This regiment was a small scouting and raiding group who used folding bikes for movement. He was later rewarded for his efforts in the military with a bronze medal for military valour.

He then became an avid cyclist and won the Giro del Piave, the Coppa della Vittoria, and the Duca D’Aosta in 1920 and the Coppe Gallo a Osimo, the Circuito del Piave and the Giro del Friuli in 1921. Then in 1923 he raced in the Giro d’Italia. In this race he was the leading ‘isolate’ rider, a rider without a team. The press noted his accomplishments and claimed him to be “best man in the race”. This race grabbed the attention of a famous French rider named Henri Pélissier, who asked Bottecchia to join his professional team Automoto-Hutchinson. Later in the same year, he went on to win a stage in the Tour de France and placed second overall. In 1924, on the front page of “Gazzetta dello Sport” July edition they wrote about Ottavio Bottecchia. They wrote: “Bottecchia triumphantly wins Tour de France and gains the aim which the best routiers(cyclists) have followed in vain for 20 years.”

Then towards the end of Bottechia’s cyclist career, he bagan to work closely with bicycle frame-maker Teodoro Carnielli to manufacture racing bikes. The business grew under the Carnielli family after Bottecchia died in Gemona, Italy, on the 14th of June, 1927.

Bottecchia was not only the first Italian to win the Tour De France but also a champion in the Italian sport for the highest level of accomplishment achieved.

Bottecchia Company History

The famous Bottecchia bicycle company started with the workings of Ottavio Bottecchia and Teodoro Carnielli. Ottavio Bottecchia used his cyclist experience to implement new ideas on how the bikes should perform. Teodoro used his extensive experience of bike frame manufacturing to make sure those bicycles were able to perform where expected.

Teodoro was an experienced craftsmen, who repaired and constructed bikes. He was from Vittorio Veneto, Italy. He was first a supporter and then President of Local Bikes Association. He recognized Ottavio Bottecchia’s talent and, not too long before Bottecchia died, he asked him to help produce a Bottecchia bike.

The Carnielli workshop started off small and soon bustled into an industry. In the years of 1930 and 1940 there were about 100 workers in the Carnielli workshop who constructed Bottecchia bikes. There was a wide variety of Bottecchia bicycles, however the most important model was the racing series. As time passed, Carnielli started to grow a liking to race competitions. He then started to promote some cyclists who used Bottecchia bikes.

In 1951, Guido Carnielli came up with a genious creation. He created the first,in the world, stand-still bicycle, meant for physical rehabilitation. Then later in 1963, Carnielli produced another huge success. They started to manufacture a new model called “GRAZIELLA”. This bike model was foldable so people could easily store bicycles in their cars. The reason this model became such a hit was because during this time period people were buying cars left and right. It was a very successful time for the Italian economy which allowed some extra spending money for it’s citizens.

At the end of the sixties, Teodoro Carnielli passed away. He left the company in the hands of his sons Guido and Mario Carnielli. To this day, they continue to keep the company thriving to achieve new heights.
